<–Chapter 1: Something Tender Inside
________________
And in all the world, there is no greater comfort than a home that calls for you to lay down your heart, one that you choose and one that chooses you.
You turn the final page of The Shillytern, soul satisfied, fully inspired by the story of the young woman whose heart was terribly broken yet found her way in the ‘verse. Ezra was right. This was the book you needed right now.
You burned through the short novel in a few evenings scattered throughout the week, any time you weren’t kept at your workbench chasing a deadline. You might have taken a more leisurely pace with it if you weren’t eager to get back to The Queen’s Lair and have a reason to talk to the shopkeeper about it. You’d started to look for him through the window in passing on your daily market runs, exchanging a wave if you caught his eye while he was helping a customer or just  happy to get a glimpse of him unaware and busy at work reorganizing shelves.
A couple of times he waved you over from the open door, once in a slow hour to chat and ask you warmly “when you might feel the pull to return to these stacks” and once on the way home to ask if any freighter shuttles had come through. They hadn’t; he clicked his tongue and seemed disappointed. Seems he did a lot of trade and sales with offworld prospectors and shippers and it had been some time since he’d seen turnover. You’d vowed to let him know if you saw any hoppers come in and his eyes shone at this simple and easy promise, “even if it is, as you say, no trouble and on your way, it is a kindness nonetheless and it deserves my gratitude.”
He had a way of speaking that made you feel like you were the most important person in town. In your lower class position, it’s not something you’re used to. But that’s why every one of these interactions or sightings made you a little happier than the last.
Once, after making an evening delivery, you passed by after closing. It was dark and the iridescent glowflies were out–tiny insects that you spent your childhood chasing but never caught–creating a second starfield on the street.
There were warm lamps glowing inside, and you could faintly hear something classical and choral coming from a radio somewhere in the shop. Ezra stood leaning against one of the cases, a book in hand, clearly having pulled a mis-shelved novel out in order to put it in its rightful place, only to have gotten woefully captured in its spell. He was too entranced and he wouldn’t be able to see you outside in the dark–none of those harsh floodlamps here in the old sector of town–so you’d stood a while, admiring the odd shepherd and his paper flock.
His scar, the missing arm, deep brown eyes that gathered more than just the words you gave him, a scruffy handsomeness that seemed more fitting to someone out on the fringe than on a settled liberation. This man had found his comfort and his rightful place among stories…which was fitting since he seemed the type to have several of his own.
And the longer you watched him, the more stories you could imagine. Not only from the past, but perhaps the future as well. Just for fun.
A crush was inevitable.

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

There's a deep irony in Berserk being so admired by people who really really hate what Berserk is about on an emotional level, but especially when writers want to take influence from it. Because Berserk is very strong thematically, and someone who can't acknowledge subtext is going to whiff on emulating anything good.
#And by that I mean that like many of its influences and descendants the plot is fundamentally driven by toxic gay shit lol#Listen there's just no beating around the bush here: you either understand this type of story is super emotional#That the softness and hope and love for humanity is vital connective tissue between the edgy violent dark setting#And that at its core the queerness is *central*#Or you will just end up creating something toothless and cynical with tokenizing bullshit at best#You cannot make that lightning strike twice if you're too scared to even write that shit as ACTUALLY core to the plot#You don’t have to make your shit gay to be good you just have to understand if your major influence was gay and why#So that you respect subtext and thematic writing and emotional resonance in writing in general#And maybe understand that if you also want credit for pushing the envelope you get where the real standard is#This is one of those things I see in equal measure in dudebro homophobes and supposedly progressive queers#No that wasn't “bait/delusion” it was barely subtext and if you go into writing with that attitude you're going to write shallow shit lol#I genuinely believe when people lament about reading comprehension they're actually talking about willful ignorance#Because willfull ignorance *does* cause a need to deny reality to a point where it warps your ability to understand information#Having difficulty comprehending text from a learning disability or improper teaching#Has fucking nothing on someone whose deliberately trained themselves to rationalize away anything uncomfortable#Tag rant over but this shit really is a plague and you can see it so starkly when it comes to Berserk#An undeniably respectable work from a place many envious little goblins that covet it do not actually respect

If you have the time, I would like to hear your thoughts on the parallels between itadori and suguru pretty pls😌🎤
omg i would love to. it’s honestly one of my fav parallels in jjk. i think it sometimes gets overlooked bc itadori is more jovial/fun/light color schemed like gojo and fushiguro is more serious/dark color schemed like getou BUT. just listen!!
to begin this parallel, we can start with the most obvious one in my mind. and that’s the fact that itadori and getou both ingest curses. they quite literally eat them. they’ve both talked about their taste—how gross they are. getou remarks that no one knows the taste of a curse. but now itadori does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my next parallel between them is more in terms of their story arc. both of them have very strong morals; morals which their counterparts (gojo and fushigro) sort of scoff at in the beginning. itadori and getou both believe that people need to be protected. and those who are stronger, should work to protect them. NOW….getou’s do change. but let’s look at the moment that forever changes him; it’s strikingly similar to a moment itadori has, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the moment riko dies for getou is incredibly similar to how junpei dies for itadori; in the sense that, here was this person they had worked to protect and save, here was this friend who they wanted in their life, and all their ideals they had placed in them, being torn very gruesomely away. this is also a pivotal moment for every wide-eyed sorcerer. they must deal with death. and the death of those closest to them.
morally, this is where their paths diverge. but we certainly see itadori begin to spiral the way getou also had to spiral when faced with the constant death and loss of other sorcerers. specifically i’ll show these next two panels to depict that;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
same position. same idea is being conveyed for both. lost, traumatized, uncertain of the morals they once held; where did it get them? where did it get others? for both, many ended up dead.
now the other parallels i’ll draw…one of which is almost an exact replica of the other, is the way in which their bodies are not fully their own anymore. kenjaku inhabits getou completely and uses his body to do things he would not have done. similarly, sukuna does the same to itadori. and there are moments where getou and itadori have tried to fight back against the one controlling them;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that parallel is the one that really did it for me. oh it’s so poetic in the most wretched way. i love it.
beyond that, both itadori and getou are not from prominent families in the sorcerer world. there is little expectation placed upon them in this regard. also, they both get entangled in the politics of the higher ups and both are ordered to be hunted and executed at a point in their story.
now i could also bring in gojo and fushiguro, too, which would also highlight the parallels between them. both are from prominent sorcerer families and have a lot of expectations placed upon an extremely powerful inherited cursed technique. both grew up in the sorcerer world. getou and itadori juxtapose them in which they have to learn how brutal this world is. in fact, they serve to remind gojo and fushiguro that the world doesn’t have to be the way it’s always been.
now, of course, morally, itadori is not like getou. and their parallels are not exact nor should they be!
itadori (and fushiguro) serve to try and end the cycles that getou (and gojo) were trapped in.
in my mind, the parallel here was always one of hope; itadori is supposed to do what getou failed to do. narratively, he has been set up to end the cycle.
at least, he had been. i’ll stop here before i start cursing out akutami and his absolute assassination of itadori’s character in more recent arcs and chapters. but really truly the getou/itadori parallel is a favorite of mine, much like the gojo/fushiguro parallel. i think this is where jjk’s writing is at some of its strongest.
thank you for asking!! i hope you enjoyed my lil analysis/presentation!

with what you tagged the wlw Kataang I agree. I don’t know if it’s just bc I’m a lesbian but wlw-ified straight ships hit so much more. Anyways do you have any other ships you think would be infinitely improved by making them wlw? Mine is defo timsteph (even tho Tim couldn’t be a girl to me) just bc they’d be such fun Sapphic exes
to be honest i think everything is better once its hit with the wlw-beam but if i had to pick actual ships to make wlw:
1. DICKKORY genuinely forget dick is a man sometimes
2. Gwevin. everyone agrees with me dwdw kevin’s a nb butch lesbian
3. Gajevy…that one gavey artist i follow;;they’re the only one who understands…
4. Yamayachi 👍👍 no one follows me for haikyuu but just know they are lesbians to me
5. Dickroy not a het ship but they are always lezzing out and for what..
special bonus:
Capril (SHOUT OUT TO ROTMNT FOR MAKING CAPRIL LESBIANSSSS) <- not really their casey is just an unhinged butch girl

My actual favorite fairytales are ones having to do with curses, getting turned into a beast, or accidentally/willingly/any-reason-ly marrying a beast or demon or monster. Prince Lindworm is one of my most favorite-est favorites. I had a pet corn snake at one point who I called Prince Lindworm (his real name was Slinky though). Other faves off the top of my head are East of The Sun, West of The Moon, The Demon in The Tree, and Featherflight.

Chinese version of Patapon 3 is hilarious
It has the original gay quote but also an extra. Where Miss Covet Hiss would say she was too busy preening/treating/taking care of herself to look after Sonarchy in the Chinese version she says she was instead too busy being gay and then proceeds to ask for a hug

20th century authors will write realistic predictions of the nightmares that arise due to the Torment Nexus that is generative artificial intelligence, then ask "is anyone gonna handle gender very poorly in this story" and not wait for an answer.
