<–Chapter 1: Something Tender Inside
________________
And in all the world, there is no greater comfort than a home that calls for you to lay down your heart, one that you choose and one that chooses you.
You turn the final page of The Shillytern, soul satisfied, fully inspired by the story of the young woman whose heart was terribly broken yet found her way in the ‘verse. Ezra was right. This was the book you needed right now.
You burned through the short novel in a few evenings scattered throughout the week, any time you weren’t kept at your workbench chasing a deadline. You might have taken a more leisurely pace with it if you weren’t eager to get back to The Queen’s Lair and have a reason to talk to the shopkeeper about it. You’d started to look for him through the window in passing on your daily market runs, exchanging a wave if you caught his eye while he was helping a customer or just happy to get a glimpse of him unaware and busy at work reorganizing shelves.
A couple of times he waved you over from the open door, once in a slow hour to chat and ask you warmly “when you might feel the pull to return to these stacks” and once on the way home to ask if any freighter shuttles had come through. They hadn’t; he clicked his tongue and seemed disappointed. Seems he did a lot of trade and sales with offworld prospectors and shippers and it had been some time since he’d seen turnover. You’d vowed to let him know if you saw any hoppers come in and his eyes shone at this simple and easy promise, “even if it is, as you say, no trouble and on your way, it is a kindness nonetheless and it deserves my gratitude.”
He had a way of speaking that made you feel like you were the most important person in town. In your lower class position, it’s not something you’re used to. But that’s why every one of these interactions or sightings made you a little happier than the last.
Once, after making an evening delivery, you passed by after closing. It was dark and the iridescent glowflies were out–tiny insects that you spent your childhood chasing but never caught–creating a second starfield on the street.
There were warm lamps glowing inside, and you could faintly hear something classical and choral coming from a radio somewhere in the shop. Ezra stood leaning against one of the cases, a book in hand, clearly having pulled a mis-shelved novel out in order to put it in its rightful place, only to have gotten woefully captured in its spell. He was too entranced and he wouldn’t be able to see you outside in the dark–none of those harsh floodlamps here in the old sector of town–so you’d stood a while, admiring the odd shepherd and his paper flock.
His scar, the missing arm, deep brown eyes that gathered more than just the words you gave him, a scruffy handsomeness that seemed more fitting to someone out on the fringe than on a settled liberation. This man had found his comfort and his rightful place among stories…which was fitting since he seemed the type to have several of his own.
And the longer you watched him, the more stories you could imagine. Not only from the past, but perhaps the future as well. Just for fun.
A crush was inevitable.

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

There's a deep irony in Berserk being so admired by people who really really hate what Berserk is about on an emotional level, but especially when writers want to take influence from it. Because Berserk is very strong thematically, and someone who can't acknowledge subtext is going to whiff on emulating anything good.
#And by that I mean that like many of its influences and descendants the plot is fundamentally driven by toxic gay shit lol#Listen there's just no beating around the bush here: you either understand this type of story is super emotional#That the softness and hope and love for humanity is vital connective tissue between the edgy violent dark setting#And that at its core the queerness is *central*#Or you will just end up creating something toothless and cynical with tokenizing bullshit at best#You cannot make that lightning strike twice if you're too scared to even write that shit as ACTUALLY core to the plot#You don’t have to make your shit gay to be good you just have to understand if your major influence was gay and why#So that you respect subtext and thematic writing and emotional resonance in writing in general#And maybe understand that if you also want credit for pushing the envelope you get where the real standard is#This is one of those things I see in equal measure in dudebro homophobes and supposedly progressive queers#No that wasn't “bait/delusion” it was barely subtext and if you go into writing with that attitude you're going to write shallow shit lol#I genuinely believe when people lament about reading comprehension they're actually talking about willful ignorance#Because willfull ignorance *does* cause a need to deny reality to a point where it warps your ability to understand information#Having difficulty comprehending text from a learning disability or improper teaching#Has fucking nothing on someone whose deliberately trained themselves to rationalize away anything uncomfortable#Tag rant over but this shit really is a plague and you can see it so starkly when it comes to Berserk#An undeniably respectable work from a place many envious little goblins that covet it do not actually respect

If you have the time, I would like to hear your thoughts on the parallels between itadori and suguru pretty pls😌🎤
omg i would love to. it’s honestly one of my fav parallels in jjk. i think it sometimes gets overlooked bc itadori is more jovial/fun/light color schemed like gojo and fushiguro is more serious/dark color schemed like getou BUT. just listen!!
to begin this parallel, we can start with the most obvious one in my mind. and that’s the fact that itadori and getou both ingest curses. they quite literally eat them. they’ve both talked about their taste—how gross they are. getou remarks that no one knows the taste of a curse. but now itadori does.
my next parallel between them is more in terms of their story arc. both of them have very strong morals; morals which their counterparts (gojo and fushigro) sort of scoff at in the beginning. itadori and getou both believe that people need to be protected. and those who are stronger, should work to protect them. NOW….getou’s do change. but let’s look at the moment that forever changes him; it’s strikingly similar to a moment itadori has, too.
the moment riko dies for getou is incredibly similar to how junpei dies for itadori; in the sense that, here was this person they had worked to protect and save, here was this friend who they wanted in their life, and all their ideals they had placed in them, being torn very gruesomely away. this is also a pivotal moment for every wide-eyed sorcerer. they must deal with death. and the death of those closest to them.
morally, this is where their paths diverge. but we certainly see itadori begin to spiral the way getou also had to spiral when faced with the constant death and loss of other sorcerers. specifically i’ll show these next two panels to depict that;
same position. same idea is being conveyed for both. lost, traumatized, uncertain of the morals they once held; where did it get them? where did it get others? for both, many ended up dead.
now the other parallels i’ll draw…one of which is almost an exact replica of the other, is the way in which their bodies are not fully their own anymore. kenjaku inhabits getou completely and uses his body to do things he would not have done. similarly, sukuna does the same to itadori. and there are moments where getou and itadori have tried to fight back against the one controlling them;
that parallel is the one that really did it for me. oh it’s so poetic in the most wretched way. i love it.
beyond that, both itadori and getou are not from prominent families in the sorcerer world. there is little expectation placed upon them in this regard. also, they both get entangled in the politics of the higher ups and both are ordered to be hunted and executed at a point in their story.
now i could also bring in gojo and fushiguro, too, which would also highlight the parallels between them. both are from prominent sorcerer families and have a lot of expectations placed upon an extremely powerful inherited cursed technique. both grew up in the sorcerer world. getou and itadori juxtapose them in which they have to learn how brutal this world is. in fact, they serve to remind gojo and fushiguro that the world doesn’t have to be the way it’s always been.
now, of course, morally, itadori is not like getou. and their parallels are not exact nor should they be!
itadori (and fushiguro) serve to try and end the cycles that getou (and gojo) were trapped in.
in my mind, the parallel here was always one of hope; itadori is supposed to do what getou failed to do. narratively, he has been set up to end the cycle.
at least, he had been. i’ll stop here before i start cursing out akutami and his absolute assassination of itadori’s character in more recent arcs and chapters. but really truly the getou/itadori parallel is a favorite of mine, much like the gojo/fushiguro parallel. i think this is where jjk’s writing is at some of its strongest.
thank you for asking!! i hope you enjoyed my lil analysis/presentation!
#i know some people liken riko’s death more to nobara’s for the two characters#and the panels are pretty similar in terms of placement too!!#i know there’s also the panels of both of them standing over mahito#they’re cool but not as narratively strong as these ones to me!#now beyond this…….i just like to be delusional and give itadori some behaviors that are a lil more like getou……#and specifically the way EYE write getou…….#i think they both could be weird coddling types#i think they both think you’re something to be coveted and protected#do not let itadori’s sillier personality fool you#there is quite literally a wolf in there#(pls remember the panel where it compares him to one when he’s after mahito)#he has his Getou Moments#or the moment after junpei dies#ANYWAYS#thank you for reading i love them both goodnight!!#cielo chats!

with what you tagged the wlw Kataang I agree. I don’t know if it’s just bc I’m a lesbian but wlw-ified straight ships hit so much more. Anyways do you have any other ships you think would be infinitely improved by making them wlw? Mine is defo timsteph (even tho Tim couldn’t be a girl to me) just bc they’d be such fun Sapphic exes
to be honest i think everything is better once its hit with the wlw-beam but if i had to pick actual ships to make wlw:
1. DICKKORY genuinely forget dick is a man sometimes
2. Gwevin. everyone agrees with me dwdw kevin’s a nb butch lesbian
3. Gajevy…that one gavey artist i follow;;they’re the only one who understands…
4. Yamayachi 👍👍 no one follows me for haikyuu but just know they are lesbians to me
5. Dickroy not a het ship but they are always lezzing out and for what..
special bonus:
Capril (SHOUT OUT TO ROTMNT FOR MAKING CAPRIL LESBIANSSSS) <- not really their casey is just an unhinged butch girl
#fran talks#anon#💌#this was ver self indulgent so thank you anon#some ships that were nominated for the highly coveted award of ‘should be wlw’:#fengqing and labru#<- both inevitably denied entry due to being not het relationships#clois but i decided clark was too much of a man for me to reasonably argue for me actually seeing them as lesbians#like i love clark. but. that is a man.#hes not even butch he really went out there and gave us simply a guy.#dickkory#gwevin#gajevy#yamayachi#dickroy

I’m gonna personally chew the sprayed edges off of all paperbacks. There. Now you have deckled edges. You’re welcome.
#I have a lot of feelings about this#hardback first was a dying star and books should go straight to paperback if you want readers to be able to afford them#but the publishing industry doesn’t like that idea (less money) so 4th wing gets successful and they go#hey! let’s make all the books pretty! that way they’re ~special editions~ and people will pay for them#and sometimes it is pretty!#but then the straight to paperback releases go wait! we want to be coveted too!#but sprayed edges on paperbacks get scuffed and the ink bleeds and it will come off on your shelves!#it’s sloppy and it’s ugly and all of it is money-grabbing anyway!#let people get a special edition for a book they really care about#after they’ve already read the paperback#books#publishing industry

My actual favorite fairytales are ones having to do with curses, getting turned into a beast, or accidentally/willingly/any-reason-ly marrying a beast or demon or monster. Prince Lindworm is one of my most favorite-est favorites. I had a pet corn snake at one point who I called Prince Lindworm (his real name was Slinky though). Other faves off the top of my head are East of The Sun, West of The Moon, The Demon in The Tree, and Featherflight.
#I also like deal with the devil/the devil and X stories a lot!#and any tale involving any type of curse or hex or geass#and I know it's silly but I do sort-of covet lesser-known fairytales and details from specific tellings.#also jsyk I don't care What the tale actually says in my mindpalace Featherflight is a giant just like her dad.#this same interest causes me to like Urusei Yatsura btw. it's so the same.#OH the tags are all a mess now but I ALSO WANTED TO SAY I recently found out that in different tellings of The Demon in The Tree people wil#change the type of food/offering given to the demon! which is obvious in retrospect but I didn't realize! I had only heard the version wher#you give the demon jam! and so that is my favorite version and the way I tell it too LOL. I love the idea of everyone intrinsically knowing#that demons just love jam#but anyway there are other variants where they give the demon different offerings as well! I can easily imagine asking the kids in the room#what it is that demon's love the most. and then whatever the kids pick is what the couple will offer the demon in that particular telling.#also yes duh yeah I like beauty and the beast! it's not really my favoritest. I like Prince Lindworm or Snow White Rose Red way more.#but there r some variants of beauty and the best that I like more than others. I am picky about it. which ultimately means I like it.

ok do i need to bring out the slides to discuss nicktoonsunite/10 years postcanon dark danny is phantomverse luo binghe? maybe i need slides
#ntu tag#going through horrible trauma but pulling yourself out of it and using it to fuel your violent inexorable rise to power#getting to the top and being like awww yeah i made it. I'm the Good End. I Won!#and then seeing just a glimpse of yourself had things been just a little different#a version of yourself that may be weaker and more pathetic but is LOVED. and SURROUNDED by love. and is able to love in return#and having the horrible realization that youre the alternate version where things Went Wrong. YOU were never the good end. you are ALONE#and... if you can't have what the other you has.... maybe you can ruin it for them too#bring him down to your level. prove that what you went through would have mad ANYONE horrible. even him#also you know dan would casually catastrophically merge the ghost zone n the real world for logistics#you KNOWWWWWWWWW he covets dannys kind of depressing ass life. his family. his friends. his lame ass catboyfriend#anyways. in this au of an au of an au. the parallels are paralleling#also now that im thinking about it: dan with tiddies OUUUTT

Chinese version of Patapon 3 is hilarious
It has the original gay quote but also an extra. Where Miss Covet Hiss would say she was too busy preening/treating/taking care of herself to look after Sonarchy in the Chinese version she says she was instead too busy being gay and then proceeds to ask for a hug

20th century authors will write realistic predictions of the nightmares that arise due to the Torment Nexus that is generative artificial intelligence, then ask "is anyone gonna handle gender very poorly in this story" and not wait for an answer.
#cool ada art tag#funny and normal robot tag#//TO EXPLAIN THE JOKE:#//dahl's The Great Automatic Grammatizator famously predicted the horrors of genAI#//but to get his point across he makes a cheap shot at female authors by having the first author to sell out be a lady#//and the protagonist sneers to his friend about how the machine wrote better romance than she ever could and she knows it#//while you COULD argue said protagonist is flawed... no one challenges his logic and the machine is objectively VERY mid at its job#//it's kinda presented like when a villain ''has a point'' ya know?? like oooh he said what we're all too scared to admittt#//lem's anthology also has a story that also predicts genAI (Trurl's Electronic Bard)#//but the only female characters to appear in any real capacity are pretty princesses to covet#//even then the first ones to be mentioned in any real capacity are well over halfway into the series (WAYYY after the genAI installment)#//and the only one to get a speaking role (that isn't a hallucination) appears in the final chapter#//she's described as lethally radioactive and a teratophile though so i'll give her that
